The economy is in a rough time right now. And the world is in chaos. Most individuals don't want to be bothered by the news media, or by movies about real life. But its a life that must be dealt with on a daily basis, and its one that an educated individual will do, whether or not they believe it is right, or whether they believe it is wrong. That is why libraries have been and always been the first area, and most effective area in budgets when the economy is weakened, job market falters, and people loose the ability to come up with a good reason to pay for their taxes.
For instance, what is leftover from taxes go to "leisure services" which is a public library, and budgets at universities that have low admissions and attendence, have to raise their rates in parking, housing, and other fees to pay for their huge overhead in library costs. Libraries serve the communities in businesses, and when budgets are tight the librarians are the first to either dock their pay, or the first to loose hours, or worse the staff gets shorter and instead of hiring one good MLS which pays 40 dollars an hour, will hire a staffer that can be paid 15 dollars an hour cause they don't have the degree from an ALA accreditation school.
Over the course of this last semester I learned a valuable lesson in referencing, researching, writing at graduate level, APA style including tables, and learning how to manage my life without having a steady income yet.
I have started my own business, which I'm turning into a non-profit business which I will do why I work as a law librarian/archivist. I need to be creative about my community, and find value in what I learn about school, and the way my library science degree will help me land a job, despite the fact they won't hire a MLS, they will go for experience over a degree, and thus avoid the high over cost of a union member.
Over the course of the next few days, I'm going to be posting blogs about my jobs I've held, what I learned from them, and what and if they have any re valance to what i plan to do in the future, and in my life as a self published author, poet, and amature film producer and owner of a film company that will be my non-profit venture.
Check back for updates.
thanks
Arielle
